Editor Post: Thoughts on Fall Winter
Today I have read this article on one of my most beloved blogs, Garance Dore. It talks about comfort and how we all got used to wearing sneakers as a fashionable footwear. It is totally acceptable these days to wear a floaty dress with a pair of sneakers (I do happen to think it looks amazing!).
But the article got me thinking. It’s not only about the footwear. I am not even talking about the fact that so many of us just don’t feel the need to wear high heels anymore. There are plenty of low heel/flats options that look as great and even can be worn to events and such.
It is the same with the clothes that we wear.
Denim, one of the most versatile and comfortable fabrics is having a huge moment: and we are not talking only about pants. Denim shirts, denim dresses, overalls, jumpsuits…you name it! Pants with elastic waist are in every shop you go, white t-shirt is considered chic and loose sporty shapes were all the rage in 2014-2015.
It seems like the last few seasons were all about comfort. Even me, who swore off wearing denim jeans, bought 3 pairs (boyfriend cut!) last year. We got spoiled by fashion media, by designers, all telling us to get comfy and cozy.
This leads me to the upcoming FW16.
Something has shifted. I think it will take a while for it to get to the mainstream in its’ entiety, but it’s in the air: basic is not enough anymore. Maybe it’s the 70’s trend that surfaced this summer and marches confidently into fall, forcing us into velvet pants and shearling jackets. Maybe it’s the abundance of high heels in the latest magazine editions. I am not sure. But the general direction reminds me of 2006- 2008, which is when I first got into fashion.
Vintage suddenly feels relevant again. I am an avid vintage collector and an opportunity to take my silk Givenchy dress out again, sort of thrills me. It is true that there is much more freedom in the way we dress right now. We don’t have to follow, we can do our own thing.
My favourite thing about fashion is mixing things up.
Here on MODAGRID we are showing emerging brands, a new, sometimes different point of view on fashion. We do this because we believe that these brands shouldn’t be as niche as they are now. They should be more available to fashion shoppers, an equal to high street and luxury in their online presence.
But as a fashion customer, I feel that it always gets most interesting when you mix items by young brands with vintage, with high street, with luxury pieces and create a look that is true to you.
And this is the sort of thing I want to take with me into my future fall pickings.
Of course I can’t what to see what our designers have in store for fall. I don’t have a definite shopping plan yet (which is weird, usually my first sweater is bought in early August). I know that I will be in need of a new cozy coat, probably something oversized. I am also excited about the wide leg pants silhouette and plan to pair them with a black turtle neck. And I am quite sure I will stay comfortable for at least one more season skipping the high heels once more…
What are your thoughts on the future season? As shops start to bring in the first deliveries for fall – what makes your heart stop? Will you be comfortable this fall or give in to the upcoming trends?
